What is your Total Cost of Ownership?




Here are the basic steps to follow in calculating the Total Cost of Ownership of your PC environment:

1) Sum up the total costs of the hardware and software in your installed base.

The easy way to calculate this is by calculating the cost of your common standard configuration and multiply that dollar amount by the number of workstations installed.

Dollar cost of common standard configuration:
(In whole dollars and no commas, i.e. "1500")

Number of workstations installed:
(In whole dollars and no commas, i.e. "400")


Next, add the costs of technical infrastructure, which includes
hardware and software costs of server, printers, bridgers/routers,
cabling, vendor maintenance, utility software, help desk tools, etc.
(In whole dollars and no commas, i.e. "80000")

Don't forget taxes, shipping and upgrades over the productive life cycle of your standard configuration and technical infrastructure.

2) Add in Human Resources cost.

Sum up the fully-loaded costs of full-time equivalent staff directly associated with PC acquisition, operation, support and training over the productive life cycle of your standard configuration and technical infrastructure.

Don't forget to consider administrative functions such as procedures and standards generation, change control processes, capacity planning, etc.

3)

Determine hidden cost percentage.

Select a percentage to represent the hidden costs, such as intangibles associated with the "shadow" organization and peer support (the cost of the time end-users go to their cubicle-mates for help rather than contacting your help desk). Also included in these hidden costs are items such as facilities costs, turnover costs, and travel and transportation costs. The Gartner Group recommends using 27%.
